Follow on Google News | Why Will You Most Probably Fail As An Author ?Askin Ozcan, an author of six published books in different genres, explains the fallacies of book publishing business today.
By: Askin Ozcan 2- Publishers choose such books which will sell the most. Therefore, books which cater to the average values and tastes are preferred by the publishers. If you write a book of superior literary value, you probably won't have as big a chance to publish your book, as an author who writes for the "average market". 3- Following categories of books are mostly read in our world today: -Criminal novels -Sex books -Cooking books -Crossword puzzle books -How- to -books -Children's books -Books by the famous men and women -Classics -Guides -Highly promoted books If your book does not fall into one of these categories, you have much less chances to be published. 4- Most publishers choose the books they will publish, from a literary agent's list, as they can not read tens of thousands of manuscripts. Literary agents are mostly full and they don't accept new authors. Your chances of getting accepted by a publisher directly, is higher outside U.S.A. On the average, about 1 in 2000 manuscripts are accepted by the big, traditional publishers. The rate is about 20% for the digital or P.O.D. publishers. 5- The big, traditional publishers, sell their books through wholesalers, by giving the books on credit. In return, the books are placed on the shelves of the bookstores on credit. The unsold books, are returned to the publishers. These big publishers also place their books on internet bookshops which are sold there on cash basis. Books promotional expenses and arranging reviews belong to the publisher. The new P.O.D. (Publish On Demand) publishers, or digital publishers offer "self-publishing" P.O.D. publishers have taken in the recent years, about 40% of the business from the traditional, big publishers which print by off-set and store the printed books and try to sell. Whereas, the P.O.D. publishers do not use off-set, print a small amount of books and distribute them to the internet bookshops and as the books are sold, the publishers complete the stocks. They do not use the off-set technique and they do not store the books, which results in lower production cost. 6- If you self publish, all the promotional work rests on you as the author. It is extremely difficult to find reviewers for your book, especially in well-known media, as they are already taken up by the "big boys" in the market. ---- Askin Ozcan has self-published the following books during five years and has experienced the above difficulties, although his books are rated to be of top quality by the experts.
