The Brae Loch Inn Cazenovia, New York March 6th, 2010 Ghost Hunting 101 $99 plus tax PER PERSON John Lincklaen, an employee of the Holland Land Company from Philadelphia, discovered a rich land area in central New York in 1792. Believing he could turn it’s land into an idyllic community, he returned a year later and purchased 3000 acres. Naming it Cazenovia, after his employer, financier Theophilus de Cazenove, Lincklaen settled in Cazenovia and became a founding father. An officer in the War of 1812, he built a grand mansion known as "Lorenzo" and urged others to build unique federalist style mansions. As Cazenovia was becoming a booming commerce community, Lincklaen continued to buy its surrounding property. But the area's boom was short lived when the Erie Canal was built and did not reach Cazenovia. The William Burr Estate, built in 1805, long served Cazenovia’s residents as a setting for weddings, dining, overnight accommodations, and business functions. During Lincklaen’s final months of life, he moved into the William Burr Estate where he died in 1822, penniless and with surmountable debt. In 1945, Adam Scott Brown “Scotty”, purchased the estate, and in 1950, turned it into the Brae Loch Inn. He died in 1967, but the Inn is still run by his family. Ghostly activity has been reported over the past 25 years, which include unexplained noises coming from room 11 and 12, even when no one is checked into those rooms, and the apparition of a young girl wearing a blue dress walking through the Inn carrying a tray of candles. Scotty’s apparition has been reported throughout the Inn, wearing his traditional Scottish Kilt. It has also been reported that while sitting around the fireplace, the distinct sound of “footsteps in tap shoes” climbing the stairs from the first floor can be heard. Employees throughout the years have also reported seeing a dark shape in the form of a man in the Inn. One waitress saw the apparition stride towards her, walk through her and disappear through a wall where there was once a door.
