Women Want Weekends Away, Personalized Gifts, Not Flowers For Valentine's Day

A new survey has found that while women are receiving flowers and chocolates as Valentine's Day gifts what they really want are weekends away, personalized romantic gifts and jewellery.

Feb. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- An online Valentine’s Day gifts survey by astrology gift report company, It’s In The Stars at http://www.itsinthestarsonline.com has found that men are only getting it right some of the time regarding Valentine’s Day gifts.

According to It's In The Stars, director, Elizabeth Ball, "Women are bored with flowers and chocolates and want their men to surprise them with a romantic weekend away, a thoughtful personalized gift or a pretty piece of jewellery for Valentine's Day."

Only a third of those women who received flowers wanted them, seven times as many women would like to be surprised with a romantic weekend away as was surprised with one, and twice as many women want personalized romantic gifts and jewellery as have received them for Valentine’s Day.

The top Valentine’s Day gifts women wanted to receive are a weekend away (30.4%), personalized romantic gift (22.9%) and jewellery (17.6%), all of which are gifts which create a special memory.

What they actually received last Valentine's Day were flowers (41.9%), chocolate (14.7%) and personalized romantic gifts (11.0%).

A romantic meal was a good gift “match”, with 10.2% receiving it and 8.7% wishing for it.

Elizabeth Ball said women were least likely to wish for perfume and chocolate (4.1% each) and not one woman wanted to receive lingerie.

"Perhaps it's because of the global economic crisis, but only 4.4% of women went away for a romantic Valentine's Day weekend but more than seven times as many (30.4%) wished they had done so," said Elizabeth Ball.

Only 12.2% of women wished for flowers but more than three times as many (41.9%) received them.

There were some distinct differences between the generations in terms of what they were more likely to receive and wish to receive for Valentine's Day than the other age groups.

Generation X women (aged 31-43) were most likely of the three age groups to receive flowers (55.8%), and wished for jewellery (18.2%), Generation Y women (aged 18-30) were the most likely to have received a personalized romantic gift (19.0%) and hoped to receive chocolate (6.5%) while Baby Boomer women (aged 44-64) were the most likely to receive chocolate (17.9%) and wanted to be taken on a weekend away (35.7%).

"But while women are hoping that their men will take them away for the weekend which obviously costs quite a bit, very few of them are spending the same amounts of money on their partners, " said Elizabeth Ball. "The survey found 82.4% of women spent less than $100 with only 6.6% spending over $200."

The five top locations where women bought their Valentine’s Day gifts were from a department store (27.0%), specialty/personalized gift website (16.8%), big box retailer eg Target (13.9%), boutique/specialty shop (10.9%), and a supermarket/grocery store (7.3%).
