The Lake has over 180 miles of shoreline, totaling over 6,090 acres of surface area. Lake Hiwassee offers three public boat launches and three marinas. Lake Hiwassee is a full recreational lake, allowing jet skis, water skiing, swimming, tubing, boat docks, fishing, and other water activities. The Lake abounds with many species of fish. The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame lists a record catch of a 54-pound striped bass from Lake Hiwassee. The Tennessee Valley Authority dam, also named Hiwassee, was completed in 1940. At 307 feet, it is the highest overspill dam in the world.
