East-Indian screw tree is a sub-deciduous shrub or small tree with grey coloured bark. Leaves simple, serrate margin, scabrous above and pubescent beneath. Flowers solitary or in sparse clusters, with red petals turning pale blue when old. Fruits greenish brown, beaked, cylindrical, spirally twisted on ripening. The twisted shape of the fruit is what lends most of its names like screw tree and maror phali.

Therapeutic use:
•   The roots and stem barks are considered to be expectorant, demulcent, astringent and antigalactagogue.
•   Root juice is used in antidiarrheal and antidysenteric formulations.
•   Fried pods are given to children to kill intestinal worms.
•   Fruits are acrid, astringent, refrigerant, demulcent, stomachic, vermifuge, and haemostatic.
•   They are useful in ophthalmic, flatulence, diarrhoea, dysentery, wounds, ulcers, haemorrhages and diabetes.
•   The powdered seeds are used to cure ulcers in ears, dysentery and stomach ache.
•   It has insulin-sensitizing and hypolipidemic property and has the potential for use in the treatment of type-2 diabetes.
