March 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Javier Albar was born in 1969. He discovered xylography (a woodcut technique) while taking a workshop at Brita Prinz Gallery. This is a technique which allows him to make his much anticipated transition from architecture to graphic design. In printmaking he finally finds the freedom of expression that he had been seeking for a long time.

In the initial phase of this transition, he works the wood in a different way from most other artists. He designs and draws his images as if they were architectural plans on transparent paper. The results are beautiful, yet surprising to him as well as his teachers and peers.

Albar is featured as the spanish artist ( http://www.arthaus66.com/events.html ) of the month of January 2010 at ArtHaus66 Contemporary Gallery.

Albar favors ‘okumen’ wood for making his prints. He carves this wood with sharp razors, cutting it with detail and precision. By overlaying pieces on his compositions and playing with the inherent transparency of the inks, he creates multi layered puzzles.

He engages in a constant search for lightness and rhythm in his interlocking shapes. Albar is constantly seeking the new an evolving his work by incorporating new techniques combined with the more familiar xylography. He has successfully used lithography and more recently he has begun to print with Arraglás plastic matrices.

The use of black ink on white paper results in crisp and strong images. Albar plays with the layered surfaces and inks creating different shades of blue, gray and white.

There are multiple references to be found in Albar’s images: many are architectural in nature but others vary in origin such as futuristic cinema, urban maps, aerial views of cities, natural elements like water, snow, stones or plants.

Seamlessly blended, Javier Albar’s compositions are timeless and captivating like the echoes of a soft mantra or the ripples on a pond’s surface.
