March 11, 2010 - PRLog -- (Boston, MA) - FACE Africa is pleased to announce their 1st Annual Gala to benefit clean water initiatives on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Taj Boston in Boston, MA. The Cambridge, MA-based non-profit was launched in 2007 by Liberian-born Saran Kaba Jones. FACE Africa works to identify and bring innovative and effective non-profit programs and solutions to communities in Africa that have the potential to address critical needs. FACE Africa supports programs in the following four key areas:  Water and Sanitation; Education and Training; Health and Nutrition and Economic Empowerment.

The small West African country of Liberia is beginning to recover from 14 years of  brutal civil warfare that left approximately 250,000 people dead and nearly a million displaced. The war compounded the suffering of millions of Liberians who, even prior to the war, had little to no access to human essentials such as safe drinking water and basic sanitation. In January 2006, the country held its first democratic elections, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected President.

In October of 2009, FACE Africa completed its first major project in Barnesville, Liberia, by providing and installing a Skyhydrant™ water filtration system to this small community. The community of 650, which had several wells but no source of a clean water supply, now has access to clean and affordable drinking water.

“In a country comprised of 3.9 million, only a quarter of the population has access to safe drinking water,” said Ms. Kaba Jones. “The Gala is a wonderful venue to help raise awareness and funds for our programs. While we are still relatively small, we are growing, and we hope that clean water will become a reality rather than a dream through our efforts.”

Peter Thum, founder of Ethos Water and former Vice President of Starbucks, will be honored for his commitment to clean water issues. Confirmed gala participants include Liberian Ambassador to the United States M. Nathaniel Barnes and philanthropist and former NBA star Dikembe Motombo. Media mogul and record producer Russell Simmons is also scheduled to attend.
