Follow on Google News | Costa Ricas Best Kept Secrets – Part 1Part 1 of a series of articles that talks about some of Costa Ricas lesser known but amazing locations.
By: Catalina Cuervo B. Today I want to start to talk about some of the hidden gems that can be found in these areas. Some activities that are not as active on the tourist radar. Not that they don’t get visited, but that they don’t get inundated and that many people may not even know about. These are some of Costa Ricas Best Kept Secrets. We start today in the Arenal area, and Rio Celeste. For those who already know about this surreal experience you know how special this particular waterfall is. Rio Celeste, a winding river in the Tenorio Volcano National Park has a unique characteristic. Minerals from the Tenorio volcano mix with the river and through a chemical reaction turns the water the most amazing shade of blue. This is something that truly needs to be seen to be believed. Surrounded by Rain Forest and this amazing waterfall you may feel that you stepped into a movie set. Hot Springs can be found throughout your day of hiking in this area and you can walk all day and never come across another person at times. For me this is one of my favorite places in Costa Rica. It embodies the magic of the rainforest and the amazing complexity of our planets inner workings. Getting to the Rio Celeste waterfall is one of the reasons it has not gained in popularity the way some of its cousins have. After almost an hour drive from the Arenal area to get to the park, you are faced with a 7 km hike to actually get to the falls. I think this is what helps to keep it in the best kept secret category. This trip can be done with a guide, or you can do it alone.
