March 17, 2010 - PRLog -- The country’s leading automotive academy has been recognised for its contribution to skills development in the motor sector by receiving an award from Prince Michael of Kent.

Taking place at a glittering gala dinner in London, Jon Winter, chief executive at S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol, was presented with a platinum SkillMiles Trophy as part of an initiative organised by the Institute of Motor Industry (IMI).

The SkillMiles scheme was set up to provide official recognition of a person's or company's contribution towards the IMI's work in meeting the skills needs of the automotive industry.

It works where points are awarded to individuals and businesses which support the drive for better skills, acknowledging both financial and 'in kind' contributions, including individual time and effort.

A tiered points system ensures that contributions made by individuals and organisations large and small are weighted fairly with four levels of recognition - bronze, silver, gold and platinum which are achieved according to the total number of points accumulated.

Jon said: “We’re all absolutely delighted to have been given this platinum award and clearly demonstrates the academy’s commitment to improving skill levels within the automotive sector. This award is for everyone at the academy who work so hard to make it the excellent place of learning that it is. They should all be extremely proud of their achievements.

“It also supports our claim that S&B Automotive Academy is the leading automotive academy in the UK and will help us progress with the plans to expand.

“SkillMiles highlights our commitment to improving skills and sends a clear message to the industry, government and general public that we're serious about developing the world's best automotive workforce.”

Apprenticeships available at the academy include; light vehicle technician, heavy vehicle technician, motorcycle maintenance and repair, bus and coach technician, vehicle body refinisher, vehicle body repairer, auto electrician and vehicle parts operators.

Along with apprenticeships, the academy now offers Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) short courses for mechanics and motor industry workers and is the only place in the West of England to offer this course.

The academy has been awarded the Training Quality Standard (TQS) which now places it as one of the top facilities of its kind in the UK.
