Stewart Clements looks at Ariston's Boiler Scrappage Scheme

March 18, 2010 - PRLog -- After many months of heating industry lobbying, the introduction of a boiler scrappage scheme was announced in the pre-Budget report at the end of last year. According to the government, as well as supporting thousands of jobs in the industry, this scheme will help to reduce energy bills and carbon dioxide emissions for up to 125,000 householders. Details are now available as to how this scheme will operate.

The scheme offers each household £400 off a new boiler replacement. In order to qualify, householders must have a G rated boiler, which will apply to most boilers over 15 years old. Some householders may ask for the assistance of a Gas Safe registered installer in determining whether their boiler is G rated. If a boiler is eligible for the scheme, the householder must contact their choice of installer for a quote on a replacement, before contacting the Energy Saving Trust (EST) with details of the current boiler and the installer they have chosen to replace it, including the installer’s Gas Safe Register number. The EST will require confirmation that the installer has visited the home and provided a bona fide quote.

Once this application is approved, a voucher worth £400 will be issued to arrive with the householder no less than ten days after application. The installer will be able to complete the work, after which he/she will provide an invoice as usual. The householder must pay for the work upfront and then send both the invoice and the voucher to the EST, who will refund £400. This rebate should be received within 25 days from the date the paperwork reaches the EST. Upgrading a Band G boiler to a Band A model can save a household more than £200 on their annual heating bill. When all 125,000 boilers have been replaced, the Government predicts a reduction in carbon emissions of approximately 140, 000 tonnes a year.
