Essential Skills Wales to be released 2010

Pupils in Wales will soon be starting the Essential Skills framework which is to replace existing Key Skills.

March 20, 2010 - PRLog -- These new skills qualifications will be implemented from September 2010. Key Skills and Basic Skills will no longer be available in Wales after that date.

Essential Skills Wales is a suite of skills currently consisting of three different skills qualifications. In due course and following revision, the suite will also include the current Wider Key Skills of Working with Others, Improving Own Learning and Performance and Problem Solving.

The core Skills are :

Application of Number; and
Communication;
Information Communication Technology.

Skills are broken down into subtasks. For example :

CE1.2  Reading

You must provide evidence that you can:

CE1.2.1
Read, understand and obtain information on familiar everyday topics from short documents.

In order to show that you are competent, you need to know how to:

•   recognise the letters of the alphabet in both upper and lower case
•   decode simple, regular words
•   recognise and understand simple words, signs and symbols
•   read short documents and simple images with repeated language patterns on familiar topics
•   follow a short written narrative on a familiar topic or experience
•   recognise the different purposes of documents
•   find the meaning of words that you do not understand
•   ask others when you are unclear about what you have read.
