Real Madrid turnaround against Gijón secures the lead

March 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Although Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal and Real Madrid star did not score he was in the origin of two of the goals.The first half  of the game left much to be desired, with the Argentine Higuaín missing the two best chances for the Merengues (8 and 33 minutes). The second half however, was completely different.

Real Madrid started off well with Van der Vaart missing what was, until then, the most glaring opportunity to score. The Dutchman failed to head in a goal, after a center from Higuaín.

At 53 minutes, the true story of the game began to be written. David Barral, of Gijón, poured a bucket of cold water at the Bernabeu Stadium as he slipped down the right, leaving Casillas helpless with a powerful kick that put the visitors in the lead.

But the crowd had little time to freeze, when one minute later, in what appeared an irregular play, Real equalized. A powerful free kick by Cristiano Ronaldo was not held securely by keeper Juan Pablo and Van der Vaart, who appeared to dominate the ball with his arms, shot into the bottom of the goal. The visitor’s protests were to no avail.

And to complete the trilogy, another minute passed and another goal was scored. A corner taken on the right goes to Cristiano Ronaldo, who nods the ball to the first post where Xabi Alonso appeared, pushing the ball into the nets, making it 2-1.

At minute 68, Real Madrid scored again, this time by Higuaín after a good individual run. The Sporting Gijon players complained again after this goal, claiming that it stemmed from a foul that was committed against Diego Castro inside the Real Madrid goal area, that the referee did not see which in fact left some doubts.

With this win, Real Madrid is now isolated in front of the Spanish league, with three more points than rivals Barcelona, who will face Zaragoza  on Sunday.
