By: Versandra Kennebrew Intl. After seeing a recent fire on the news where a mother of six lost two of her children to a blaze originating from an illegal electrical hookup, Kennebrew could not understand why this mother did not seek the help that was available to needy families in Detroit. She wondered, what could be done to help disseminate information about available assistance to people in underprivileged communities. Her question was answered when she heard about the advisory board position. So, she picked up an application and gathered the fifteen signatures (from registered voters in her community) necessary to have her application approved and add her name to the ballot. Since 2008, Kennebrew has used her book “Thank God for the Shelter” as a homeless advocacy tool. Kennebrew says, “My position as an advisory board member to the Detroit Department of Human Services will allow me to be apart of the solution to the access to information problem I have found in many urban communities around the country. Through her visits to shelters, she found that even her book could not help many because of illiteracy. This is why she produces an audio book. Those who had problems reading said they would listen to a CD to learn how to improve their lives. She believes we must meet people where they are and give them options for living a better quality of life. During the next two weeks, Kennebrew’s radio interviews, book signings and workshops will become opportunities for her to campaign for votes.
