With the recent economic downturn and loss of jobs, many people are going through depression and a stage in their life when everything seems pointless.

If you're in the same situation, don't despair. There are ways to bring the excitement and happiness in your life if you follow the five steps outlined in this article.

1. Take A Hard Look At Your Life. Everybody has things in their lives which are beautiful and precious. Instead of dwelling on the negatives, make a conscious effort to find things that you can work on and be proud of.

It may be volunteering at a soup kitchen or teaching in a Sunday school. Make a list of things that you're good at and find a way to use a few items from the list that will instill a strong sense of self-confidence.

2. Set Pleasant Long-term Goals. People are motivated when they have a sense of what they want out of their lives. If you have nothing to look forward to in your life, you will be miserable.

Setting a pleasant long-term goal, like an early retirement or taking a trip to Europe, will make you focus your energy to achieve your goal. You will work hard because you'll be able to give a reason for doing so.

3. Avoid Self Doubt and Self Pity. Besides the financial hardships created by job layoffs, people often go through emotional turmoil after job losses. They often question their self-worth and capabilities and forget all the great accomplishments in their earlier jobs.

If you find yourself doubting your self-worth, go to the library and find books about ordinary people achieving extraordinary things using their sheer will power. It will motivate you and you'll be able to gain confidence in your knowledge, skills, and capabilities.

4. Be Prepared For Change. According to Heraclitus, the great Greek philosopher, the universe is in constant change. Every moment that has already passed is different from the present. So, don't dwell on the past. Use the present time to shape your future.

If you find your last job is becoming obsolete, find out how you can leverage your existing skills to jobs of the future. Visit your local community college and talk to career counselors. They will be able to suggest classes that will prepare you for a new career.

5. Learn New Things. The World Wide Web has made it possible to learn anything you want from the comfort of your home. Learning new things will keep you engaged in the present. Take up a hobby, like photography, blogging, or cooking. Who knows, you could end up advancing your hobby to a new career.
