March 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Having been a father for just over a year now, I look back now and remember the fear I had that came along with having a new child.  On the top of the list was certainly changing my baby’s diaper.  I remember the night of my son’s birth and my wife was still recovering from her C-Section.  Guess what that meant?  I was on diaper duty.  Now, not having any nieces or nephews to have practiced on, I was going in blind.  So, the time had come where daddy had to step up to the plate.  I walked over with the nurse to his change table and was ready for my first change.  Petroleum Jelly, wipes and diaper at my side.  Holding my breath, I went in for the kill.  Removed the Velcro straps, wiped the bum, laid on the jelly, strapped up the new one and ... tadaaaaa!

Well unfortunately that’s not how it went.  It went more like, couldn’t get the straps off cleanly.. didn’t know how hard or soft to wipe... no idea how to wrap up the diaper and enough petroleum jelly for the next 10 changes.

Feeling guilty for a few minutes, I then realized that you can’t really practice for this sort of thing.  I mean, there are no classes at the local college.  It all has to come with practice and the only way to get that is to do it.  So, how many other dads are there like me out there?  No idea on how to perform one of the most important actions for a baby.  This is why I have listed some tips on what to do when it’s time to change the number two.

1. Make sure that you have everything you need close at hand.  There is nothing worse than having to go to another room or reach for what you need when changing the baby.
2.Have your baby on their back.  If you are using a table that is elevated, like a change table, it’s recommended to use the safety straps in case your baby rolls.
3.Unfasten the diaper tabs. Raise your child's bum off the diaper by softly grabbing their ankles and lifting up the legs. If there is a lot of bowel movement, you can use the top half of the diaper to gently sweep it towards the lower part of the diaper. If you are changing a girl, make sure you always wipe from front to back to help avoid infection.
4.Move the diaper away from the baby.
5.Wipe the baby’s bum with either a wet cloth or wipes.  There are a lot of great non-alcoholic wipes available on the market too.
6.Put the wipes in the dirty diaper.
7.Take the petroleum Jelly and get some on your fingers.  (Make sure your hands are disinfected)  Wipe the jelly in the crack of the baby’s bottom.
8.Grab the front of the new diaper and pull it towards the baby’s belly button.
9.Fasten the Velcro straps to the front of the diaper.  Make sure it’s not too loose or too tight.
10.Roll up the dirty diaper with the dirty wipes inside in a ball and fasten it together with the straps.
11.Dispose of the diaper in a waste bin or diaper disposal bin.
12.Pat yourself on the back.
