New Steel Surface Treatment Competes with Stainless Steel Performance

The SCS surface treatment for hot rolled black sheet steel and plate creates an attractive alternative to HRPO and cold roll steel (CRS).

April 2, 2010 - PRLog -- It's frequently been outlined how SCS sheet steel -  http://www.scsprocess.com/index.html - is an important substitute for pickled and oiled. We are convinced SCS can supplant about 90% of P&o usage. The cost disadvantage sheet metal fabricators incur for having oil on their steel has previously been examined elsewhere. Furthermore, SCS' less expensive cost and steel purchasing merits -  http://www.scsprocess.com/advantages/scs-steel-purchasing.html - are fully covered in other blog posts. In general, that makes us comfortable enough to incorporate these common Pickled & oiled applications in SCS market coverage.

So what is the missing 10% of the P&o market ? We're holding back this 10% for two areas where we don't yet hold enough information to be certain. They are extreme stamping applications and powder coating prior to fabrication. Although SCS stamping tests have thus far been effective, we do not recognise the SCS stamping constraints. In addition, prepaint coil trials were effective, but there is not yet a sufficient amount of experience to 'check off' the prepaint box. Additional trials must be completed in these areas to manage to confidently declare SCS can perform as well as HRPO.

Where Else Does SCS Steel Work Well ?
Keep in mind that SCS replaces flat rolled categories besides P&O. A previous bog post about a major sheet metal fabricator's usage of SCS to take the place of HRPO is indicative of a lot of prospective customers. They find that even if SCS costs a lttle bit more than untreated hot rolled, the rewards it makes to their production functions more than negates the cost. See http://www.scsprocess.com/steelfabrication/scs-sheet-stee....  For this reason, we foresee SCS can capture up to 75% of untreated hot rolled usage. Also, keep in mind that in the event that the SCS consumer turns into an SCS supplier by obtaining their own SCS processing line, their product costs may in fact drop.

Can SCS Steel Really Replace Cold Rolled Steel
As a final point, we guesstimate that SCS may serve approximately 15% of the CRS demand from customers. That might appear small, but end users often specify cold rolled steel for extremely exacting dimensional, hardness and grain structure qualities. The hot band steel that functions as the starting material for SCS is normally not made to such exact standards.

On the other hand, there's a tantalizing new flat rolled steel that is worth talking about along with the cold rolled (crs) category: that is Castrip. This new steel producing technology can accurately turn out consistent thin sheet -- currently as low as 0.036 inch and projected to reach 0.027". This means Castrip might begin replacing cold rolled as a way to attain superior dimensional results at more affordable cost. So though we haven't factored this 'wild card' into the foregoing analysis, SCS processing of Castrip may be a method to capture market share over and above the quantities already cited for Pickled and oiled, basic hot band and cold rolled steel.

SCS Steel Suppliers provide the surface treatment, SCS for Smooth Clean Surface. SCS removes rust/mill scale leaving a high quality steel surface finish, smooth as stainless or cold roll. SCS steel is ideal for sheet metal fabrication and resists rusting.
