The Detroit, minority-owned Ferguson Enterprises, Inc., landed the excavation and grading contracts for both the Tigers Comerica Park and the Lions sports stadiums in the late 90’s.

“We won those contracts because Ferguson Enterprises was the lowest bidder and our record for completing former projects on time and under budget,” boasted President, Bobby Ferguson.

Ferguson shares some history of his dad’s company.  “When my father started the business, there was a lot of commercial hauling and grading work being done,” he said.  “Mainly it was residential grading for subdivisions and new homes.”  Unfortunately, growth was anything but rapid.

“It took us a long time.  Not only was it really difficult, in fact, it was impossible when you are a small company.  But, in spite of our size, we did what we had to show that we able to take on the bigger projects.”

Ferguson Enterprises competed with four other companies that bid on the stadium projects.  After winning both bids, Bobby Ferguson finished the projects under budget and ahead of schedule.

“As an owner,” Ferguson advised, “You have to do your homework and take care of your people.  Because you’re only as good as your workers.”  He also warned of the sacrifices that are sometimes necessary.  “The pay is slow sometimes from the contractors in charge.  Some wait and hold up the money for 30, 60 or 90 days.

Therefore, you have to ensure that you have the money to meet your payroll obligations, and your subcontractor bills.  Because they’re not going to wait for their money.  As a result, you will lose good, quality people.  This was the important lesson my father taught me.  I always made sure that my people got paid.”

Today, Ferguson Enterprises continues to grow with an employee roster of over 150 skilled and professional support staff for such important projects as the Detroit Water and Sewage Department’s $275-million reconstruction of the city’s 1900-era water system and plant

Ferguson Enterprises is fully insured for general liability and workers’ compensation insurance.   As a Minority Business Enterprise, FEI is certified with the State of Michigan and the City of Detroit.
