By: Aim High Academy With the knowledge that over 25 percent of children receiving WIC benefits in Pawtucket and Central Falls Rhode Island tip the scales at obese when the statewide childhood obesity average is only 20 percent, Aim High and Children’s Friend turned WIC sites into mobile gymnasiums and learning centers to give over 50 children the opportunity to learn and practice activities that lead to growing up healthy. “We believe that it is easy to tell people to have a more active lifestyle, but it is equally important to show them how to be more active,” said Amy Nelson, President of Aim High Academy. “And we all know that it is not easy to find safe and affordable opportunities to exercise, nor is it easy to find bilingual activities,” Children who attended these events read stories about healthy eating and exercising in both English and Spanish, learned stretching techniques on mats, climbed through obstacle courses and raced through the sites on scooters.
