Integrative Psychiatrists Richard P. Brown and Patricia Gerbarg Present a Trauma Workshop in Association with The Sexual Assault & Mental Health Project and Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, April 23, 2010

New York - Richard P. Brown, MD, and Patricia Gerbarg, MD, will present a one day workshop April 23, 2010 entitled Breath~Body~Mind Trauma Training: Empowering the Healer and Client”, in collaboration with The Sexual Assault & Mental Health Project, a program of the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA), and Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.  April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The workshop will begin with a review of the scientific basis and clinical practices for PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).  Participants will then be taught a set of basic movement and breathing techniques for the rapid relief of symptoms of PTSD for the patient, as well as stress in caregivers.  The breathing techniques have been shown to relieve anxiety, depression, and the effects of trauma and violence. How to integrate these techniques into clinical practice to enhance recover will be discussed.

The Breath~Body~Mind teachings developed by Drs. Brown and Gerbarg are a unique fusion of ancient and modern mind-body approaches derived from QiGong, yoga, Christian monks, Coherent Breathing, Open Focus Meditation, and martial arts.  The workshop is from 8:45 am to 4:00 pm at Marist College Goletti Theater, 3399 North Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, tel. (845)575-3000.   The $26 course includes a light breakfast and lunch.   Registration is at the nyscasa.org web site; a limited number of scholarships are available

Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. He gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups, as well as workshops for non-profits such as Serving Those Who Serve in New York City.   He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation.  His workshops have helped thousands of people deal with everyday stress and enabled survivors of trauma and mass disasters to recover their health and well-being.  

Dr. Gerbarg is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College.  She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  In addition to her clinical practice, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters such at the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the southeast Asian tsunami, and military personnel.

Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg are co-authors of the award-winning How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, 2009) with Dr. Philip Muskin.  They have an Internet site at HaveAHealthyMind.com with mental health information and resources.
