April 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (1891 – 1956) will always be remembered as one who did his best to turn the Wheel of the Law toward Social Justice for all. While many parts of India celebrated April 14, 2010 as the new year day, it  is a significant day for all Indians as it is the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar who is globally known as the ‘Father of India's constitution’. He firmly believed in a society built on the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. His passion for justice was intense to the extent that in 1951 he did not hesitate to resign from his position as the country's first minister of law when Nehru's cabinet did not give consent to pass the Hindu Code Bill which included social and economic rights for women.

Ambedkar had his education at Bombay University, Columbia University as well as London School of Economics. In 1952, Columbia presented him with an honorary doctorate for his service as "a great social reformer and a valiant upholder of human rights." At Columbia where he experienced social equality for the first time, Ambedkar had studied under John Dewey, who inspired many of his ideas about equality and social justice.  Considering that Ambedkar is one of its most remarkable international alumni, Columbia University instituted a Dr B R Ambedkar Chair at its law school to mark his birth anniversary this year.
