From recycling events to a guided prayer walk, the Southland will celebrate Earth Day today and throughout the weekend.
 
April 22, 2010 - PRLog -- From recycling events to a guided prayer walk, the Southland will celebrate Earth Day today and throughout the weekend.

Some Earth Day events even stretch into next week and next month.

Earth Day, designed to raise awareness and appreciation for the environment, was founded by the late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin. The first event was April 22, 1970.

In its 40 years, Earth Day has grown in popularity and scope with events taking place on an international level.

Local activities include:

In Orland Park, the annual village cleanup starts today. From 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, residents can discard household trash, excluding hazardous items, electronics and construction materials, at the public works facility, 15655 Ravinia Ave.
