Portland, April 21st - Great Falls Construction, a construction management and general contracting company, announced today that they will finance the rebuilding of The Cookie Jar in Cape Elizabeth. Recognizing the bakery’s importance to the local community, Great Falls’ Owner, Jon Smith, has designed a plan to finance and renovate the building which previously had been closed from massive storm damage.
The bakery had been in Cape Elizabeth for more than 50 years when it closed in 2006 after a storm tore the roof off. Even in its absence, The Cookie Jar has remained a community marker with hundreds of fans on Facebook who have been eagerly awaiting the return of their favorite treats.

Following the past year’s economic challenges, and facing what many have believed is a prolonged recession, The Cookie Jar’s Owners Donna and Tom Piscopo questioned the best source of funding for their rebuilding project and began looking in all directions.

Great Falls’ decision to finance the project came out of owner Jon Smith’s dedication and support of the preservation of area “landmarks.” Jon Smith and the Great Falls Construction team agreed to take on the rebuilding project, and will provide the financial means needed for restoration and reopening. “We want to see this long standing icon come back from the destruction that occurred several years ago,” says Great Falls’ project manager Todd Rothstein.
Great Falls will install everything from structural elements, to cabinets and display cases. The project is expected to be completed before the end of May, and for many fans, the opening can’t come soon enough. “I can’t wait to have my favorites, “chocolate sugar donuts and blueberry muffins!” says Cape Elizabeth resident Anders Nelson.
This story is a wonderful example of how small business owners have come together in uncertain times. “Not only is Great Falls helping our family recover from devastation of being out of business for so long, but they are helping the community around the bakery and the people that we will employ, which is at least 15 to begin with”. “They are truly making a difference in a lot of peoples’ lives.  I can’t begin to say how happy we are to have our lives back, I catch myself smiling a lot”, says Cookie Jar owner Donna Piscopo.
