April 25, 2010 - PRLog -- Many of us make this common mistake of not priming your drywall before painting. Primer is not only a must have for re-paint a surface, it is also a must have for applying paint for the first time. Before applying your primer you should first give it a good stir, make sure the primer is properly mixed especially if it has been sitting for some time. Get a consistent milky finish and pour the primer into a tray and ready for application. It is always a good idea to use a separate roller for your primer and paint, if you want to save on the roller, you can always store your old roller from priming by keeping the roller moist and web. This can usually be done by putting the roller into a sealed plastic bag. Remember to protect your furniture and floor before applying the primer or paint. Always have some drop cloth handy for this purpose. You should also protect any trims, door or window trims, baseboard or crown moldings by carefully taping the edge so paint or primer will not touch those delicate surfaces.

Primer will usually dry within one hour, and the primary purpose of primer is to create a layer between your drywall and your new paint. Primer is designed to adhere to surfaces and to form a binding layer that is better prepared to receive the paint. Because primers do not need to be engineered to have durable, finished surfaces, they can instead be engineered to have more aggressive filling and binding properties with the material underneath. Remember applying primer before paint is not unnecessary work, as matter of fact primer will not only make your paint more durable, stick to your wall better, and it even helps to bring out the true color of your paint.

Get into the habit to apply primer before painting, it is not a luxury but necessity. Don't skip this crucial step of preparation before apply paint.
