Angular cheilitis has far reaching repercussions in practically any one's daily existence unfortunate enough to be stricken by it. So much so is it's seriousness that medical experts have more than one name for it: angular cheilosis, angular stomatitis, and perleche.

But whatever name you choose to call it, it's still not going away as easily as a passing fancy. Angular cheilitis as defined by Wikipedia "is an inflammatory lesion at the labial commissure, or corner of the mouth, and often occurs bilaterally. The condition manifests as deep cracks or splits. In severe cases, the splits can bleed when the mouth is opened and shallow ulcers or a crust may form".

There is no specific cause for this disease to occur, although once it is present, the sores may become infected by the fungus Candida albicans or thrush, or other pathogens. Medical studies may have a slight clue that links its initial appearance with nutritional deficiencies, namely the B vitamins and iron. Such lack of essential vitamins may be from poor diets or malnutrition. One other important vitamin deficiency is that with a lack of zinc.

Of the individuals most affected by angular cheilitis are the elderly and children. Because the elderly experience a loss of their teeth, over-closure of the mouth happens thereby rendering the corners of their lips with an unnecessary pool of bacteria-laden saliva to proliferate. Ill-fitting dentures can also help contribute to having an over-closure of the mouth.

Less severe cases happen during cold spells and during the winter season, which happens as chapped lips. This occurrence is usually seen in young children and teenagers. Licking of the lips may not be advised, though it may provide temporary relief but may only serve to worsen the condition. Angular cheilitis can also be caused by some form of bacteria, a fungal infection, harsh medications which dry the skin.

We use our mouth and lips constantly throughout our waking hours: for eating our favorite foods, drinking thirst quenching beverages, conversing with family, friends and co-workers, kissing our kids and spouses, and for our varied facial expressions. We often take these things for granted, but once something bad occurs and pain rears its ugly head, then we are forced to take notice.
