May 13, 2010 - PRLog -- The Yale University Library is the second-largest academic library in the US. It is home for about 13 million volumes, including rarest books, like the Gutenberg Bible. Its collection of rare books ranks among the best in the world and it attracts visitors from all over the world. It is also one of the world's leading research libraries providing access to "unique record of human thought and creativity."

The Yale University Library pays great deal of attention to interior lighting of the 22 buildings that house its books. The lighting requirements are very particular. The lighting should be abundant to enable easy reading and work. The halls are large and the lighting fixtures are massive. The light from the fixtures should be safe for the rare books on display and on desks. The lighting fixtures should be match architectural style and and the very spirit of the famous Ivy League University.

When the Yale University Library had to replace the older chandeliers, after careful consideration, it awarded the project to the best craftsmen in the nation it could find.
Greatglas Inc. of Wilmington, Delaware can be proud to be on the top of this list,as a purveyor of glass parts for unique lighting and architectural projects. Many years of experience creating custom glass lighting fixtures, as replacements, replicas, or unique lighting designs made Greatglas an obvious choice in many lighting and architectural projects. Church lighting, theater lighting, gas light districts, old mansions - Greatglas has done them all.

In order to satisfy the multitude of lighting requirements the new grand chandeliers in the Yale University Library combine frosted borosilicate (Pyrex) cylinders and plates together with hand crafted wrought iron to give an antique look to this restored library of Yale University. Frosted glass defuses light and seems to yield an even, soft, and peaceful light. The light projected from frosted glass is less offensive, it produces more of a glow than a glare.

The Pyrex cylinders are 6" in diameter and 9" of overall length. The cylinders are frosted on the inside.
The Pyrex plates are cut in a "pizza" shape with 15" sides and a 3" wide narrow nose and an 8"wide radius cut on the wide end.
Both sides of the plates were frosted.

The famous firm of Samuel Yellin has been building wrought iron masterpieces in America since 1909.
This legendary firm has been chosen by the Yale University Library to create the wrought iron frame and parts of the chandeliers.
They created an absolute marvel of a chandelier. It houses, securely and gently, the glass parts created by Greatglas making the whole lighting ensemble worthy to be a museum exhibit.

Greatglas is honored to partner with this storied firm of Samuel Yellin in this project.
Two true giants in craftsmanship worked together to bring new light to the old halls of the Yale University.

The motto of the Yale University says: Lux et Veritas -- Light and Truth.
The partnership of Samuel Yellin and Greatglas yielded admirable results in the very spirit of the old Yale's motto.
