May 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Odors in the workplace can lead to an unpleasant environment for customers and employees. Opinions can quickly be drawn by customers of the type of business that you are. Employees are proven to work more productively in fresh smelling environments. So many factors contribute to an unpleasant smell. Garbage's not emptied, plants, dust, carpet not cleaned regularly, humidity or lack of ventilation, multiple different employees microwaving various foods and multiple other factors contribute to an unfriendly odor.

There are many options available for building owners to combat a foul smell. Obviously the best way to tackle the issue is with proper ventilation. Opening doors or windows if possible can make a great difference and is also a non expensive option. The following are some basic steps to help fight those funky smells:

•Depending on foot traffic throughout the building setting up a regular schedule for deep floor cleaning. This might mean having hard surfaces cleaned with a good floor steamer or having a professional carpet cleaner come in for the upholstery and carpets. If you have hard surfaces a good floor steam cleaner can be run by most employees or janitorial companies. Floor buffers, floor scrubbers and tile machines might be necessary for some floors.

•Having the ventilation system maintained at least once a year. Duct works can add to the odor in a building and it is extremely important to not only change your air filters monthly or quarterly, but to also have a professional clean the ducts thoroughly. Air duct cleaning is a must.

•Having the office cleaned regularly and not just surface cleaning. Having a regular cleaning schedule can greatly reduce bacteria which in-turn feeds off dust. Bacteria does release gases that produce odors. Also by cleaning with a slightly damp cloth regularly will reduce the need for harsher chemicals that may be needed to remove built on dirt.

•Consider having air purifiers throughout the building. Air purifiers clean the air for everyone and remove impurities for a healthier working condition for employees. Air purifiers will reduce dust, odors, airborne viruses and allergens.

•Adding a continuous fan fragrance dispenser throughout the building. Low cost and come in many different scents. They contain glycols which are proven to kill viruses, sanitize and deodorize the air. Periodically it will release a mist non-toxic to employees. Great for cafeterias, bathrooms and anywhere in the office.

A healthy smelling workplace adds for greater productivity, less absenteeism and a happier workforce. The steps above are just a few that will assist in greatly eliminating odors and adding to a more pleasant office environment.
