"Companies use gift cards to acquire new customers, to encourage customers to upgrade their membership or subscription, to switch from mailed to emailed statements and/or invoices, to stay with them when the renewal comes due and to refer their friends to become customers," said Elizabeth Ball.

"In effect, they are giving customers a form of cash to spend and enjoy as they wish," she said.

Many companies select gift cards which offer shopping or entertainment - but all of them know that their customers are highly likely to tell their partner, friends, family and colleagues that they received a gift card for subscribing, upgrading, switching or staying with them.

"Some companies use Amazon, some offer hotel, airline or attraction gift cards, others use national department stores or big box retailers while others target younger customers with movie or iTunes gift cards," Elizabeth Ball said.
