Richard P. Brown, MD, a psychiatrist who integrates CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) into his practice, will present a two-day workshop on Friday and Saturday June 11 and 12, 2010, at New York Insight Meditation Center, 28 West 27th Street, 10th floor, Manhattan, New York, entitled “Enhance Your Meditation with Breath~Body~Mind.”

The Breath~Body~Mind workshop will combine movement and breathing meditations. The core technique will be Coherent Breathing, a modern form of anapanasati practiced by advanced Thai Buddhist monks. This practice, described in a Chinese text 3000 years ago and followed by Zen monks, was independently rediscovered by two modern research groups. The effects of Coherent Breathing are magnified by combining it with advanced breathing techniques from yoga, Qi Gong, and Russian Orthodox monks to bring the body’s systems into optimal balance and a higher energy state.   Another component of the workshop will be Open Focus meditation developed by Les Fehmi, PhD, one of the fathers of biofeedback and a Zen teacher.  Open Focus induces EEG patterns similar to those found in advanced, long-term meditation practitioners.  Deeper, richer meditative states can help relieve physical and psychic pain.

New York Insight is an urban center for the practice of “mindful” awareness, also known as Insight or Vipassana meditation. The center’s programs include talks, weekly sittings, silence retreats, and workshops for the integration of meditation teachings into daily life.  “Our center is a place where everyone—of different ages, nationalities, cultures, languages, ethnicities, sexual orientation, and spiritual backgrounds—is welcome to begin or deepen meditation practice based on the teachings of the Buddha,” states Joseph Schmidt, Executive Director.

Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. He gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation.  His workshops have helped thousands of people deal with everyday stress and enabled survivors of trauma and mass disasters to recover their health and well-being.  Dr. Brown co-authored the international award-winning book How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, 2009) with Dr. Patricia Gerbarg, and, Dr. Philip Muskin.

Dr. Brown and his wife, Dr. Patricia Gerbarg, also a psychiatrist, have an Internet site at HaveAHealthyMind.com with mental health information and resources.

Registration at the workshop is $25 for Friday and $50 for Saturday, and is open to therapists and the public.  The phone number is (212)213-4802, the web site is nyimc.org, and the e-mail is nyinsight at earthlink.net.
