"The quality of the engraving is basically down to the quality of the original artwork provided, if the image is low resolution and blurred the final result will have a very unprofessional look. To achieve a good product a high resolution image at around 300dpi is required preferably in a vectorised format in various shades of greyscale to achieve a shaded engraved finish." states Andy Smith at Keep It Personal.

It is not only the quality of the image that matters, some materials are better than others for engraving directly onto. Slate and marble for example are particularly good for engraving detailed photographs whereas glass is only suitable for logos and text.

The engraving technique used is also dependent on the material, for example a co2 laser is not capable of engraving directly onto metal surfaces, a drag diamond machine is usually used in this instance and is more time consuming. There are special ceramic sprays available to allow direct engraving onto metal however these can be very expensive.
