Chemicals Found In Household Cleaning Products Linked To Breast Cancer

A worrying report in the Daily Express this week (20 July 2010) confirmed what many green cleaning experts believe: that household chemicals, such as those found in air fresheners, can increase the risk of breast cancer in women.

Those who use the products most often are twice as likely to develop the disease as those who use them infrequently, say researchers from Silent Spring Institute in Newton, Massachusetts, USA. The results were calculated when the Institute interviewed 787 women between 60 and 80 years of age with breast cancer and 721 healthy women of the same age.

Air fresheners doubled the breast cancer risk among women in the highest-use group, as did weekly use of mould and mildew-removers.

There is of course a lot more research needed before these findings are proven beyond any doubt. But many people involved in the cleaning industry are not too surprised with the findings.

Green cleaning methods highly recommended by industry experts

Laura Carey, Director of First Class Cleaning and Maintenance Limited (http://www.essexcleaningservice.co.uk), an Essex based green cleaning company, says homeowners should be made more aware of the health risks associated with household chemicals, and has urged people to consider using green cleaning methods.
“It has long been the view that items such as air fresheners and mildew removers can cause and aggravate serious allergies such as eczema and hay fever. This research suggesting a link with cancer is very worrying indeed, and is further proof that using green cleaning methods could be safer for the whole family, and could potentially be life saving if this research is proved correct in the future.”

Green cleaning services are available through companies such as First Class Cleaning and Maintenance, and involve expert cleaners using natural products and techniques to clean the home as opposed to chemical based products.
