Follow on Google News | Novelist wrestling with the demons of 9-11While conventional wisdom on the Internet says that a book can't do September 11th justice, Doug Shiloh wrestles the demons of 9-11. He begins our journey in the unlikeliest of places.
"I am surprised that much of the traffic is coming from the United States," Shiloh said, taking a break from rewriting his second novel. "We have a bad reputation for handling death, compared to other countries." While the book's cover claims it's a satire, readers' feedback call POOKOO "real life" and that's OK with its creator. "In the same way, [the new book] "Waiting for the End" isn't a mere 9-11 novel," Shiloh added. "It would be limiting. I'm not about limits or putting a fence around my fiction. I started organizing an idea for the book in 2005, set aside, and have been on it like a dog on prime rib ever since May, 2009." The meticulous author who crafted POOKOO over the course of 17 years is happy to report that WAITING FOR THE END "won't take that long." "I shuffled and juggled a lot during those years and learned that lesson," he says. "But my focus now is something an old coach would be proud of. You need to [stay on task] when you're working with these subjects. Part of me says I owe it to the victims and their families." Like many Americans, Shiloh has ties to those who perished at New York's Twin Towers - including high school classmates, but even more, the global sheet of grief that the terrorist attacks created. "When you're wrestling not only with such a public tragedy, and wrestling with the aftermath, the only real course to being true is to find the common ground." If it takes him a little longer than hoped, Shiloh sets out to make a work that is readable years afterward, especially in the Digital Age.
