Aug. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Dujiangyan Irrigation System or Dujiang Dam is situated in the middle and upper reaches of the Minjiang River, 40km from Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, China. It is an irrigation infrastructure built in the Warring States Period (B.C 475 -221) by the State of Qin. It is still in use now and irrigating an area of more than 5,300 square kilometers in the region. The dam was designated as one of the World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2000.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System is comprised of three main constructions, Fish Mouth Levee, Bottle-Neck Channel, and Flying Sand Weir, which work in harmony with one another to scientifically against flooding and keep the fields well supplied with water. Fish Mouth Levee is the key part of the construction, which divides the water into inner and outer streams. The inner stream carries about 40%, rising to 60% during the floods, of the river’s flow into the irrigation system, while the outer stream uses up the rest, and flush out much of the silt and sediment.

Today, the irrigation still plays a significant part in agriculture on the Chengdu plains, and discharges its function perfectly. It is a historical wonder of science and technology, and arouses special attention of the scientists across the world.
