At sea level, pelicans and frigate birds are very common on the beaches, as well as black sea eagles who love to eat the abundant tiny red crabs. In the deep south of the Osa Peninsula you will also be greeted by the splendid Scarlet Macaw who has made a recent comeback on the beaches of the Corcovado National Park, where they feed on their favorite sea almonds.

As you travel to higher elevations in the South Pacific region, you will find a wide variety of rainforest bird species. One of the richest birdlife areas in Costa Rica is from the Baru Reserve to the highlands of Tinamaste village at 3000 ft found on-route to San Isidro / Perez Zeledon. Within this mountain range there have been annual bird counts of over 300 species counted – just during the few days that the bird research walk is conducted!

Here waterfalls like Cascadas Farallas in the exotic tropical Baru rainforest are home to a multitudes of water loving tropical species such as the tiger heron who can be seen devouring blue crayfish in the ponds, 3 species of trogon, warblers, peewee, a multitude of humming birds, blue crowned manikins, chestnut billed toucans, friary acari, mot mots, woodcreepers, and many other rainforest birds.

As you venture higher towards Tinamaste village you will also find many species of fly catchers, speckled tanagers, summer tanagers, blue tanagers, palm tanagers, migrating oriole, and a multitude of parrot species.  If you continue past San Isidro on your way back to San Jose you will find a hidden mountainous region where it is quite chili, here the hills are covered with gigantic rare tropical oak trees. It is here in a misty forest that during Feb and early March the infamous Quetzal can be found more easily while mating and caring for their young.
