Sometimes your laptop will just shut itself down and get a black screen, and it's really unexpected. A lot of times this is caused by your laptop overheating. If you feel your battery becoming very warm or overheating, the battery should be removed from the laptop and allowed to cool to room temperature before attempting to use again.


Here're simple ways to improve laptop battery life time.

1. SHUT OFF the WIFI if you don’t need it. Usually, there is a switch, but sometimes you have to do it in the WIFI config. Turn off that radio (which you should be doing on airplanes anyway).  That WIFI radio transmitter uses a good bit of power. It uses even more when you’re NOT connected since it’s “seeking” your home connection and often ramps up the power to try to find it. Think of how fast your cell phone drains when you have poor coverage.

2. Lower the graphics use. You can do this be changing the screen resolution and shutting off fancy graphic drivers. Graphics cards (video cards) use as much or more power today as hard disks.

3. Keep the laptop and the battery in a comfortable temperature. Exposure to high heat or extreme cold can damage the battery; not to mention the laptop. Do not constantly leave the power adapter plugged in. When the adapter is plugged in, the battery is constantly being charged. This is taxing on the battery's life span.
