Layoffs Could Be Opportunity Knocking

Applications for unemployment benefits sit about 450,000 per week. Layoffs and forced career changes are pushing record numbers of people to walk outside their professional comfort zone.

Aug. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- While unemployment numbers across the US seem to be slowing, benefits claims are still elevated and trending  sideways in most states with employment holding steady, but low.  Due to layoffs in the service industry California’s initial jobless claims were up 19,809 for the week ending July 17.

"The labor market is steadying but at a relatively high level of unemployment. It offers a hint of improvement in labor market conditions," John Lonski, chief economist at Moody's Investors Service in New York told Reuters.. "Nevertheless, jobless claims remain quite elevated, and suggest labor slack persists."

Public sector employees have been hit hard recently in cities like Oakland,CA with layoffs for police and fire and teachers. Fourteen of California’s 1131 school districts are facing bankruptcy according to the LA Times, while some 160 districts are only barely holding on above the bankruptcy level.

All of this bad news, in addition to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s spokesman Aaron McLear confirming this week that furloughs for more than 200,000 California state workers were back because McLear explained "We have a fiscal crisis," has made some in the effected segments decide to take their professional and financial fate into their own hands.

“It is always risky to start a business but statistics show your chances of success are much higher with a franchise. In our current economy with high unemployment over an extended period many are taking up the challenge of business ownership. People want to be financially independent and there is no better way to achieve that goal ”  said Jeff Kerr, founder and president of ACFN (American Consumer Financial Network) and ATM franchise based out of San Jose, CA  “People want control over their lives and a financial future they can depend on; for many people those benefits outweighs just about anything else.”

ACFN has seen steady growth in the business from all the professions that have been so profoundly affected by recent layoffs, furloughs, and incentive retirement packages. “
