Aug. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- One might not expect to find spread betting and CFD trading company City Index (http://www.cityindex.co.uk) standing shoulder to shoulder with online encyclopaedia giant Wikipedia in terms of web presence, but that was exactly the case in January this year.

The pair were the most visible websites to UK consumers searching for Contracts for Difference (CFD) trading, spread betting and stock trading services in the first month of the year - as revealed in a new report by Greenlight, an independent consulting agency for search engine optimisation and pay-per-click advertising.

The report was built on a review of more than one thousand of the most popular keywords employed by users making spread bet or CFD trade-related searches on Google. The agency then applied these keywords to find the stock trading, spread betting and CFD trading websites that were most visible to UK consumers in natural and paid search alike.

Based on the complete total of 777,000 searches for trading-related keywords during January, the results showed Wikipedia to be the most visible website in natural search, whereas City Index was the most visible PPC advertiser. Whilst Wikipedia achieved 35% share of visibility through ranking at position one on page one of Google for 27 of the 1,200 keywords analysed, paid search called for a slightly more intricate dissection.

Greenlight took an in-depth look at the advertisers appearing in the paid search spaces in order to assess their ‘share of voice’. This is a measure based on the frequency with which the advertisers featured in Google, the ad position they bid for and the search volume for the keywords they bid on. In the case of City Index, the spread betting and CFD trading firm managed a field-leading 48% share of voice after bidding on 79 of the top 90 keywords at an average ad position of five.

City Index is also making headlines outside of the search engines. Not long ago the company launched its first spread betting and CFD trading app for the iPhone and even more recently cut its spreads to one point on a range of major indices, much to the delight of the spread betting community.

And now, albeit for one month, the spread betting and CFD trading expert has edged ahead of Wikipedia in the online visibility stakes. The irony of course being that both City Index and sister spread betting brand Finspreads have their own dedicated Wiki pages.
