Aug. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Drug and alcohol rehab is not limited to offering de-addiction medication or a soothing environment. Most such centers have programs in place that renew the patient not just physically but spiritually as well. The programs encompass concurrent physical restoration and psychological make over. If all goes well as planned the patient should recover within the time frame after undergoing the course at these centers. However in actual life this is not the case. While there are a lot of success cases it can be observed that there are barriers to recovery in the case of some patients. These barriers may be extraneous influences or rooted within the psyche of the patient himself.

Despite the best treatment and facilities, victims suffer from sudden relapses, and many a times, turn towards re-addiction, precisely because of such barriers to the treatment. These barriers can be physical, mental, social or environmental. The extent of these hindrances can be judged by their effect on the life of the victim, more particularly, during the treatment period.

1. Physical and Emotional dependency
Habits are hard to break and what started off as a mere diversion to ward of stress then turns into a routine creating a dependency both physical and psychological. It takes time and perseverance to overcome both these dependencies. The underlying causes of depression, attacks of anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) often intrude during the treatment process and may sometimes cause the patient to slide back to drinking or taking drugs.

2. Personal or constructed belief towards drug and alcohol use
At times, certain beliefs or attitudes of the victim compel him to seek alcohol or drugs as a relief alternative. For instance, people often feel too helpless and vulnerable in the absence of alcohol, and end up falling for its overdose to escape from their reality and unavoidable circumstances. This creates complication for the successful completion of rehab programs.

3. Family and Social bonds
Friends and family are potential barriers in the progress of rehab programs. In some cases, the friends encourage the victim into drug and alcohol use. The desire to be socially acceptable, conform to peer behavior or even go "one up" leads most people to usage of drugs or alcohol or a combination of both. While the patient may be trying to give up his friends or social group may negatively influence him to the extent of ostracizing him which influences him to plunge back to the life of addiction. Since like people tend to gather such addicts form their own groups, removed from social circles, devoid of family and true meaningful friends. This is a significant barrier to recovery.

4. Flawed Treatment Program
Alcohol and drug rehab do not comprise comprehensive and updated programs. At the very outset, there are distinct varieties of rehab centers, like detox rehab centers, inpatient rehab centers, outpatient rehab centers, residential rehab, adolescent rehab centers, Christian rehab centers and 12-step rehab centers. While going for the treatment, one should prioritize the correct selection because the environment and service offered by the rehab is a crucial factor influencing the progress of the victim. If the treatment program is ineffective or unsuitable, then addiction can never be cured or success is only temporary. Under such circumstances, past experience of relapse or withdrawal may create a state of mind that such programs are ineffective and are best avoided.

These barriers to the treatment of addiction can be spontaneous or induced. None of these is permanent in nature. Where there is a will there is a way and if the patient has the will there are any number of suitable alcohol and drug rehab facilities which can indeed effectually treat him to be permanently rid of his affliction.
