Sept. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was added to many products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance in the past. From studies across the globe we now know that breathing high levels of asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and debilitating diseases such as asbestosis.

When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed, asbestos fibers may be released into the air which can then be inhaled by people.  The risks of developing lung cancer and other diseases from asbestos exposure increases with the amount & type of fibers inhaled.

Products that might have contained asbestos include many building materials and products that were commonly used in homes and other structures before restrictions were put on their use.  Many older homes and buildings still contain many of these materials which include everything from some types of insulation, roofing, siding and joint compounds to name just a few of the materials.

Future Environment Designs, a leading indoor air quality (IAQ) consulting service, provides asbestos testing & training on Long Island, across New York and the Northeast.  “Even though asbestos use has been restricted from most products for decades in the U.S., the material is still being used and still causing health problems for people,” reported Angelo Garcia, III Principal-Industrial Hygienist of FED.  “At FED we can test bulk samples to determine if materials contain asbestos and test the air for dangerous conditions that may cause possible cancers for building occupants that may not appear for decades.  FED is pleased to have also supported the release of a new public outreach video to help educate the public about asbestos exposure dangers.”
