New York, NY – Patricia L. Gerbarg, MD, integrative mental health expert will deliver a talk on “Neuro-Psychoanalysis and Mind-Body Treatments for PTSD: Interoception – The Royal Road to Trauma Schemata” to the Neuro-Psychoanalytic Study Group, Sunday, September 26 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, sponsored by the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. Richard P. Brown, MD, authority on Complementary and Alternative Medicine, will lead an experiential session introducing some of these practices.  The lecture for professional colleagues will be held at 40 West 13th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, New York.

Dr. Gerbarg will present research evidence of neurophysiological mechanisms, clinical studies of survivors of mass disasters, and case material to illustrate the therapeutic potential of practices she and Dr. Brown are developing to facilitate recovery from trauma, including treatments from their award-winning book, co-authored with Dr. Philip Muskin, How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton).  Integration of mind-body practices with verbal therapies will also be discussed.

The Neuro-Psychoanalytic Clinical Study Center of the National Psychological Association of Psychoanalysis (NPAP), established in 2004, is the first clinically based center in New York City serving patients with brain lesions due to strokes, tumors, trauma, and other injuries.   “Treatment focuses on the individual’s inner world – emotions, thoughts and memories, both conscious and unconscious.  This mode of psychotherapy facilitates the reestablishment of a sense of self and helps the person deal with his or her altered life circumstances,” according to the Center’s service statement.   NPAP is one of the oldest and largest psychoanalytic organizations in the United States.  Information available at (212)288-0760, or http:  //neuro-npap dot org.

Dr. Gerbarg is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College.  She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  In addition to her clinical practice in Kingston, NY, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters such at the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the southeast Asian tsunami, the earthquake in Haiti, genocide and war in Sudan and Rwanda, and military personnel.

Richard P. Brown, MD, Associate Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, has a consultation practice in biological psychiatry and is a certified teacher of Aikido, Qigong, Yoga, and Meditation.
