San Diego led street lighting projects

Sept. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) President Lisa Bicker announced one of the largest street light conversion projects in the nation, estimates that with full implementation, this project has the potential to save taxpayers up to $10 Million annually in energy and operating costs, reduce energy consumption by 60 Million kilowatt-hours, and lower greenhouse gas emissions by 40,000 tons of CO2 every year.

Approximately 145,000 streetlights throughout the SDG&E service territory are eligible for upgrades with more energy-efficient technologies, which will result in numerous additional regional benefits including:

Reduced energy consumption up to 40 percent

Reduced maintenance costs (longer luminaire life and fewer replacements)

Improved color for a more pleasing appearance in the community

The Street Light Working Group (SLWG) was established in 2009 under funding provided by the California Public Utilities Commission.  Sponsored by SDG&E’s local government energy efficiency program. More than half of San Diego County's municipalities and several other public agencies are actively participating in the program.

"There is no one-size-fits-all solution" said Marty Turock, Co-Chair of the Street Light Working Group.  "By providing this forum, each city can choose which technology and options are best-suited for their specific locale and application needs."

Over the past four months, the SLWG has reviewed the latest lighting technology, financing strategies and public-private implementation models for retrofit projects. The group also developed a comprehensive set of online file sharing for all participants which includes regional roadway street lighting specification guidelines for both induction and LED cobra-style luminaires, as well as a comprehensive vendor qualification process.
