By: Texas Mathworks The curriculum project originated from Mathworks' laboratory of summer math camps. The sequence of three textbooks for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade is aligned to the Texas Essentials Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and is designed to prepare all students for algebra by grade 8 or younger. This past school year the curriculum was piloted in four school districts across Texas, directly impacting over 1,300 middle school students. Data from the pilots show that students from all backgrounds who use the Mathworks curriculum achieved significant gains in algebra readiness. "Tokyo Electron's support of the Mathworks curriculum project furthers our efforts to establish a model program for the state and nation. Our integrated approach of summer math camps, teacher training, and innovative curriculum is directly addressing one of the biggest achievement gaps we face in education: the difference in mathematical ability between different socioeconomic groups. The careful sequencing of mathematical concepts in the curriculum prepares all students for algebra and higher-level mathematics," # # # Mathworks' mission is to develop model programs and self-sustaining learning communities that engage K-12 students in doing mathematics at a high level. Our programs include Summer Math Camps, Teacher Training, and Curriculum Development. For more information, see http://www.txstate.edu/ End
