Oct. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- Phoenix, AZ - According to a new report “Advanced Metering Infrastructure Market Potential,” implementation of AMI could cut electricity use by four percent annually, saving over $20 billion annually for businesses and consumers nationwide.

AMR revenues in North America are currently estimated at more than $1 billion, and will potentially double in six years. In addition, Advanced Metering technology could provide customers with real-time price signals and usage data, allowing them to better manage their utility usage. AMR deployment has been encouraged by the Energy Policy Act.

Old equipment and technology, and inefficient data collection methods, continue to cost utilities, as well as consumers, money.  Advanced meter reading technologies allow utilities to collect meter information without a visual inspection, through radio, power line, or wireless communications.

Utility company benefits, in addition to improved accuracy and savings on labor costs that would otherwise be spent for meter reading, include the ability to integrate with any existing billing system. As a result, utilities that choose to deploy AMI systems will not need to invest in new billing systems to take full advantage of the savings.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that two million smart grid meters have been installed across the country to help reduce energy costs. “As a result of an unprecedented investment from the Recovery Act, smart meters are being installed in Ohio and across the country to create a more reliable, modern electrical grid and give consumers the ability to monitor and control their energy use,” said Secretary Chu. “Smart grid technologies will give consumers choice and promote energy savings, increase energy efficiency, and foster the growth of renewable energy resources.”

The report examines the automated meter infrastructure market potential, details economics and regulations, and profiles major players.
