By: PCG Digital Marketing The first Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHV) demonstration program in Washington DC is being launched at Georgetown University. Georgetown University will host two Prius loaner vehicles to assist in the global plug-in hybrid study between TMS and the U.S. Department of Energy. Georgetown University will work in conjunction with TMS and the Department of Energy to study the long-term evaluation of the vehicles, educate and inform the public about the PHV, and also to collect real-world driving data. “By taking steps toward accommodating electric vehicle use, Georgetown continues to advance our sustainability goals, including the reduction of our carbon footprint,” said Karen Frank, vice president for university facilities and student housing at Georgetown. Throughout the study over 150 PHVs will be delivered to over 600 demonstration program partners in the United States and across the world. Georgetown University will begin its study in December with employees test driving the PHV in three month rotations. Employees participating in the study will be able to use the new electric vehicle charging stations in the parking garage below the new LEED-certified Hariri Building. Following green thinking, LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system by the U.S. Green Building Council. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Clean Cities and Georgetown University to gain driver feedback on this new technology. PHV cars can currently run for approximately 13 miles at up to 62 mph, similar to the Prius hybrid. Recharging a PHV takes approximately three hours with a standard 110V electrical outlet or 90 minutes with a 220 V connection.
