Chances of a Lifetime can be Found in Chilean Miner Resuce

Oct. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- It is being called the Chilean Mining Miracle.  This miracle was born of a constellation of chance circumstances, albeit in part likely negligent, that occurred in the moment in time when the mine caved-in.  The miracle rescue  was created because the up on top--and down under--earthlings left nothing to chance in the recovery effort as they thought of and planned for every possible human and technological contingency.

According to Dr. Russ Buss and his Moment-to-Moment Optimism blog, there are many multiple meanings of “chance” in this mining miracle.

   * A “chance” set of co-occurring events, each by itself not posing a major threat, but when combined spelled tragedy, not unlike “The Perfect Storm.”
   * The realization that a “chance” to prevent the disaster was likely squandered because the warnings and reports of many dangerous safety violations were ignored.
   * A team rescue effort that left “nothing to chance.”
   * Many of the miners have expressed they now have a "new chance" to remake their lives in more personal, family oriented and spiritual ways.
   * It has been a “chance” for the world to learn much about the relatively unknown country of Chile as we once again benefit from 21st Century technology that has demonstrated  “the world is truly flat.”
   * It has been a "chance" for the Chilean people and culture to lose their underdog status on the lower part of one of earth’s continents and to shine with new found self-esteem.
   * It is a “chance” for the worldwide mining industry to rethink safety and get serious about spending the time and money to make mining a “safe” occupation.
   * It is “chance” to think about the inner earth like we do outer space.  We have rarely left anything to chance in making sure we could bring one or a small team of astronauts back from space safely, and it is now time to be thinking that way about the thousands of miners who march down into the earth everyday, worldwide.
   * It is "chance" for new opportunities to re-envision a life, remake safety rules, regulations and enforcements, remake disaster relief practices, write a book about the unique and optimal decision making processes that resulted in this miracle.
   * It has been a “chance” for President Sebastian Pinera to provide inspired and optimistic leadership for his country and the world as he spoke about all the “chances” and new opportunities this miracle mining rescue has created when he said while posing with the 33 rescued miners:

o       “The miners and the country will never be the same.”

o       "They have experienced a new life, a rebirth.”

o       “We aren't the same that we were before the collapse on Aug. 5. Today Chile is a country much more unified, stronger and much more respected and loved in the entire world."

o       "Never again in our country will we permit people to work in conditions so unsafe and inhuman as they worked in the San Jose Mine, and in many other places in our country."  .
