Oct. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- This year the Smithsonian’s National Museum of The American Indian asked it’s friends and supporters to come up with creative ways to help fund a new initiative to combat stereotypes.  Answering the call were many individuals and organizations across the country with creative ways to collect donations. One world music performer who spent many years in South America has started a campaign to raise funds by giving away MP3’s of her band traditional music from the Andes. Her webpage for the project is: http://go.si.edu/site/TR/Events/nmai?px=1157905&pg=personal&fr_id=1080.

Behind this free music fund-raiser is a multicultural musician named DARIA. A five-time award-winning musician, DARIA (full ethnic name – Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou) has traveled the world to sing for audiences in more then a dozen languages and over 16 different countries. Her internet byline is “music to inspire all the world’s children” so she was pleased to hear that after almost a decade and a half of touring, several American papers had dubbed her “an ambassador of song”.  Later that year, the Christian Science Monitor printed a story about her work and commented: “When Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou makes music, the world listens – literally!”

From a mixed bag of heritages including years spent in Native American, Latin-American as well as mainstream USA, Daria has often seen “the kids that get left out” and had always performed songs from various heritages and celebrated these cultures in concert.  In the past 15 years, her musical projects have taken her everywhere from South America to Europe and the Middle East and she has collaborated on projects in Kenya and on several US Native American reservations.  Her music is used widely in US classrooms as well as in projects in South Africa and in Australia as part of “Teaching Tolerance” and “Respecting Others” curriculums.  Additionally, in 2009 Daria’s website (www.dariamusic.com) was given a Parent’s Choice Award as a family-friendly place on the web to introduce children to world cultures.
