Balfour Mount Champion Award – Quality End-of-Life Care Coalition of Canada
The members of the Quality End-of-Life Care Coalition of Canada (QELCCC) have dedicated their efforts over the last ten years to advocate for quality end-of-life care for all Canadians.  Focusing in the areas of advocacy, communication and public awareness, family caregiver support, professional education and research, the QELCCC continues to show leadership for quality end-of-life care.  The QELCCC is a network of over 30 national organizations with an interest in quality end-of-life care.  The QELCCC believes that all Canadians have the right to quality end-of-life care that allows them to die with dignity, free of pain, surrounded by their loved ones, in the setting of their choice

In the ten years since its creation, the actions of the QELCCC have resulted in some significant gains.
Among many of the Coalition’s achievements over the years, most recently the  QELCCC released the Blueprint for Action: 2010 to 2020 which identifies new priority areas and recommendations for the next ten years and provided a summary of progress made to date, current knowledge, issues and gaps.

As the QELCCC celebrates its 10th anniversary, the receipt of the Balfour Mount Champion Award is a testament to the Coalition’s outstanding contributions to end-of-life care in Canada over the last ten years.

Award of Excellence – Fred Nelson
Nominated by his peers, Fred is recognized for his years of service as a Social Worker in hospice palliative care. Since 1978, Fred has worked tirelessly for both the St. Boniface General Hospital and since 2003 with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority as Social Work Program Coordinator and now as Psychosocial Program Specialist.  Fred’s commitment and faithful affiliation and work with the provincial and national hospice palliative care associations over the years are testaments to his belief in advancing the voice of hospice palliative care for all.

Media Award
An award-winning writer, producer, host and director in radio, television, film and new media, Tim makes documentaries for broadcast, web and theatrical release, and as private commissions. Tim was selected as the 2010 Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s (CHPCA) Media Award recipient for his role as Director of the film “Griefwalker”.  The CHPCA would like to thank Tim for challenging our thoughts while bringing to light the importance of understanding the significance of our death.

Each year the CHPCA recognizes outstanding individuals or organizations that promote and/or advance hospice palliative care in Canada. These awards highlight the exemplary efforts of individuals, companies and/or organizations who demonstrate a personal and/or professional commitment to hospice palliative care in Canada.  All awards will be presented during the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Conference, taking place Thursday October 28th, 2010 in Ottawa, Ontario.
