The Office of the New York State Comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli, states that in past year ending March 2010, his office received $653 million in unclaimed property yet only paid out $227 million to over 360,000 account holders from New York and elsewhere. Although this amount may be the largest a close second is $1.7 million that is still unclaimed that belongs to a single individual.

According to the States Office, depending on the type of account, all that is normally needed to make a claim is a signature, security number and proof of connection with the account and the address that was listed on that account.
Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed dividends or payroll checks, refunds, traveler’s checks, trust distributions, insurance payments or refunds and life insurance policies, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments, utility security deposits, mineral royalty payments, and contents of safe deposit boxes.
“During these very difficult economic times, taking action now could put much needed money in the pockets of thousands of New Yorkers” says Palonek.

You don’t have to be a resident in New York to file a claim, if you or your parents banked in New York and opened up a bank account or made a deposit for utilities or rent, you can still have some money there that is now classified as unclaimed property.
