PRLog -- Gorillaz is a British band created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. This innovative project consists of an assortment of eclectic music played amongst a backdrop of a fictional fantasy realm. The band is made up of virtual characters, 2D, Murdoc, Russel and Noodle. Albarn’s project is a collaboration between various musicians. Ranging from electronic, pop dub, hip hop, and rock, the Gorillaz music is a fusion of different musical genres. Amazingly the band's first album in 2001 entitled Gorillaz sold over seven million copies. Consequently they made their mark in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. This band also received a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize 2001 Award. However the band asked for the nomination to be withdrawn. The accolades don’t stop there. Released in 2005, their second album, went double platinum in the USA, 5 times platinum in the UK, garnered 5 Grammy Award nominations. For which, they picked up an award in the Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals category. At Glastonbury 2010 the band were the headliners for the first night.
