Dr. Azuka Anyiam receives African and Caribbean Business Council Award for Innovation

PHILADEPHIA, PA, Nov. 13, 2010: Dr. Azuka Anyiam the Chief Executive Officer of VICA Technologies LLC was among eight African and Caribbean leaders recently honored by the African and Caribbean Business Council (ACBC).

Dr. Anyiam was presented with the ACBC Award for Innovation in recognition for his pioneering and innovative waste to energy project in Bamako, Mali, at an Awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Philadelphia on Saturday, Nov. 6 2010..Presenting the Award, Pennsylvania State Senator Mike Brubaker described Dr. Anyiam as a man with the 6th factor and a champion of good service in his community. He called Mali project transformatory and one that can bring a liberating effect to the energy and waste problems in Mali. Receiving the Award, Dr.Anyiam thanked the African and Caribbean Business Council for this recognition and dedicated the Award to his wife and all African and Caribbean countries undergoing severe waste and energy problems. The other honorees included Tina Byles Williams, CEO & CIO of FIS Group, Inc. a Philadelphia based asset management and investment advisory firm, Christopher Chaplin, Hard Beat Communications executive, Giordani Jean Baptiste, Lawrence Eburuoh, CEO of Nova Realty, Kayode Malomo and Anthony Nwokeukwu of Atlas Communications, Kahiga Tigha of Gonzalos and Tiagha Law frim, and Bolaji Gray of BJ Ventures.  

The event was attended by the Pennsylvania State Governor Edward G. Rendell who gave a powerful speech and enjoined ACBC to take advantage of opportunities provided by the State through the Department of Community and Economic Development. He praised the exciting work of Deputy Secretary of International Business Development Wilfred Muskens and encouraged ACBC to tap into the resources provided by his office. Deputy Secretary Wilfred Muskens has indicated during the Business Roundtable that the State of Pennsylvania is the 18th largest economy in the world today and has strong trading relationship with Africa with Kenya at 42%, Sierra Leone 25%, Mali 14% and South Africa 5%.

The highpoint of the evening came with a moving speech by Keynote Speaker Alfa Demmellash. Hers was an enigmatic story of struggle and success. She told ACBC not to be afraid of failure because it is in failing that we rise.

The ACBC was founded in 2006 with the mission of promoting and preserving the business interests of African and Caribbean entrepreneurs in the greater Philadelphia area while bridging the cultural divide between member countries and the larger community through education and the encouragement of mutual tolerance.
