Nov. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Families throughout Britain, one in four of which are already experiencing bad credit problems, will soon be facing an increase in airport tax by up to 55% on holidays from UK airports.

The Air Passenger Duty (APD) rise has caused outcry amongst UK airlines, most of whom believe it to be an unnecessary increase.

“The timing of the airport tax rise could not have come at a worse time for many families who are looking to visit relatives or get away from their day-to-day stress this Christmas”, confirmed a spokesperson for Bad Credit Loans 4 You, a UK specialist at sourcing bad credit holiday loans. http://www.bad-credit-loans-4-you.co.uk/holiday-loans-for-people-with-bad-credit.html

Individuals looking to purchase a last-minute Christmas holiday or book a dream holiday for the New Year will see an increase for all flights out of UK airports.

Some travellers will no longer be able to afford the holiday or will need extra bad credit holiday loans to help finance their holiday before it has even begun.

Passengers travelling on a flight to popular destinations such as the Far East or Australia will be hit by an additional £120, taking their airport tax alone to £340.

Independent organisations, package holiday firms and the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) have all condemned the airport tax increase.

Virgin Atlantic, Sir Richard Branson's famous airline, warned that the rise will make family holidays 'unaffordable for many'.

Their fears were also backed up by British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh, who branded the APD rise a 'disgrace'.

The airport tax was initially introduced as an attempt to cut carbon emissions by discouraging people from flying, but has developed into a cash cow for the previous government and now the Coalition.

Annual revenue from the APD is set to rise from £2.3billion to £3.8billion by 2015.

Four distance bands are used to allocate APD on to flights from UK airports:
Up to 2000 miles
2001 – 4000 miles
4001 – 6000 miles
More than 6000 miles

However, there are anomalies in the calculations which appear to discriminate against some of the most popular destinations like Egypt and the Caribbean.

An individual flying in economy to the Caribbean will pay £75 airport tax, £15 more than a passenger who flies to the US or Hawaii.

Similarly, an economy flight to Egypt incurs a £60 airport tax compared with only £12 for Turkey.

The tax is also applicable to child tickets, whilst higher rates come into effect for anyone in premium economy, business or first class.

Unbelievably, private jets are immune from the tax entirely because they are not classed as commercial flights.

So a family who has saved all year or taken out bad credit holiday loans to pay for their holiday is required to fork out the extra airport tax, whilst a millionaire can depart from the other side of the same airport without paying the APD.

Low cost airline easyJet, has argued that APD should be linked to the emissions a plane produces and not how far they travel.

Bob Atkinson, of travelsupermarket.com agrees with easyJet and believes; “The tax should apply to the actual mileage or as a percentage of the total paid.”

“There needs to be a complete revamp of the APD scheme.”

Phil Salcedo, of Travelzoo UK, commented; “Around 30% of travel deals don't include taxes.”

“Travellers need to be extra-wary and make sure the price they expect to pay doesn't massively increase.”

The industry is rightly wary of how consumers are going to react, with many looking to close down certain parts of their operations over quieter periods of the year.

Gareth Williams, of flight comparison website Skyscanner, said; “Those determined to fly long-haul will consider indirect flights via Europe to save money.”
